Born in Sydney, Gavin studied science at Sydney University before graduating from the Australian Ballet School. During his 12-year professional dance career,Gavin danced with the Australian Ballet, Opera Australia, the Royal New Zealand Ballet (soloist) and joined Sydney Dance Company from 1998-2005. Gavin has worked for and collaborated with many of the industry’s leading directors/ choreographers, including: Meryl Tankard, Graeme Murphy, Matz Skoog, the Balanchine Trust (New York), Stephen Petronio, Stephen Baynes, Jonathan Burrows, and Lloyd Newson. Gavin directed and choreographed three works for Sydney Dance Company: Grace, Soul Effect and Emotor and also choreographed a new Australian musical Story of Abbey, before leaving Australia for London. Since arriving in London, in March 2005, Gavin has worked on the Juliet music video with choreographer Rafael Bonachella by Studio Production Co, with the Royal Opera as Assistant Choreographer for their production of Mitridate and has performed the role of the Slavemaster in Cameron Mackintosh’s West End production of The Phantom of the Opera. Gavin assisted choreographer Javier De Frutos with Chichester Festival Theatre’s production of Carousel and has choreographed a duet for the BBC show Strictly Come Dancing. Last year he worked with choreographer Francesca Jayne on Tim Burton’s feature film Sweeney Todd for Warner Bros, and also on Saul Dibb’s feature The Duchess for Paramount. Most recently Gavin choreographed a workshop version of The Sleeping Beauty for Reckless Films at Sadler’s Wells Theatre (The project is a collaboration with Arlene Phillips and director John Stephenson, former head of Jim Henson’s “Creature Shop”.) Gavin wrote and directed the short film About Turns, which is currently doing well on the festival circuit. Gavin is the Children’s Director/ Associate Choreographer for the Toronto production of The Sound of Music, and was also the Assistant Resident Director for the West End production. |
